TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Temulawak, also known as Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb, has long been used as a medicinal plant in Indonesia. Its rhizome contains various active compounds, such as curcuminoids, xanthorrhizols, and essential oils, which are beneficial for the body.
Besides its medicinal properties, temulawak is increasingly being used for skin care. Several studies have shown that this plant has the potential to help treat acne, protect the skin from premature aging, and naturally brighten the complexion.
Benefits of Curcuma for Beauty Care
The active compounds in curcuma have biological activity that is beneficial for the skin. This content can help treat problems such as acne, inflammation, and premature aging. Here are some of the benefits of curcuma in beauty care:
1. Anti-acne
Curcuma rhizome extract formulated into a water-based ointment has been shown to be effective against acne-causing bacteria, such as Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus.
According to IPB.ac.id, research shows that a cream containing 7.6% Javanese turmeric extract can inhibit the growth of these bacteria. Topical application does not cause skin irritation at this concentration.
2. Antioxidants and Skin Protection
Curcuma contains curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin, which are compounds with high antioxidant activity.
According to IKBIS.ac.id, methanol extract from Javanese turmeric flower stems is known to neutralize free radicals. This helps prevent oxidative stress that can damage skin cells.
3. Anti-aging
Xanthorrhizol, the main compound in Javanese turmeric essential oil, has been shown to reduce the expression of MMP-1, which is associated with collagen breakdown. This compound also increases the production of procollagen-1 in skin fibroblasts exposed to ultraviolet light. These effects support Javanese turmeric's role in anti-aging skin care.
4. Whitening (Skin Brightener)
As reported by IPB.ac.id, ethyl acetate extract from the stem of Javanese turmeric flowers has been shown to suppress the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase. This enzyme plays a role in the formation of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. This makes Javanese turmeric a potential skin lightening agent and a preventative for hyperpigmentation.
5. Mild Anti-Inflammatory
The curcumin in Javanese turmeric has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, equivalent to some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Topical application in certain concentrations can help reduce symptoms of redness, swelling, or mild irritation on the skin. This effect supports the use of Javanese turmeric in skin care products for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
How to Use
Cucumber can be used in skin care through various processed products. Some simple formulations can be prepared at home, while ready-to-use products are also available commercially. Here are some common uses:
1. Javanese turmeric powder mask:
Mix 1 teaspoon of Javanese turmeric powder with 1 teaspoon of honey and a little water. Apply evenly to the face, leave on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
2. Anti-acne cream/ointment:
Use a water-based (non-comedogenic) product containing 5–10% curcuma extract.
3. Anti-aging serum:
Apply 2–3 drops of curcuma serum to a cleansed face, ideally at night before moisturizing.
According to the Media Neliti website, before using curcuma topically, it is recommended to perform a patch test to detect any allergic reactions. Use on open wounds or very sensitive skin should be avoided. For optimal results, curcuma use should be combined with sun protection, such as sunscreen during the day.
With its antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and brightening properties, curcuma has potential as a natural active ingredient in skin care products. Several studies support its use for conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and signs of premature aging. Topical use can be done safely as long as you pay attention to the dosage and skin condition.
