TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is evaluating the distribution of free nutritious meals for students in "elite" schools, as part of the National Nutrition Agency's (BGN) refocusing efforts.
Met by Antara at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, June 11, 2026, BGN chief Nanik Sudaryati Deyang said the agency's new strategy is conducted to ensure precise targeting and reach students who are most in need.
Free nutritious meals have previously been distributed to all schoolchildren, regardless of economic status. Nanik confirmed that this scheme will be reevaluated.
"Yes, that's right (there will be restructuring)," she said, adding that "wealthy schools" will be targeted in the review process.
"Those who are privileged and wealthy," she added.
Additionally, the Indonesian government is also considering taking measures to ensure the program's efficiency. However, the details will be further discussed in subsequent meetings.
In line with President Prabowo Subianto's mandate, Nanik previously stated that the distribution of free nutritious meals will be focused on underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions, as well as pregnant people, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers.
Therefore, Nanik went on, the nutrition agency has issued a circular to suspend Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG), or the MBG public kitchens, that do not serve the aforementioned groups.
Meanwhile, the SPPG development in the 3T regions will explore several alternative implementation schemes to avoid burdening the state budget.
