TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured in an explosion at a UN facility near El Adeisse in southern Lebanon on Friday afternoon.
"This afternoon, an explosion at a UN facility near El Adeisse injured three peacekeepers, two of whom sustained serious injuries," said UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel in a statement conveyed by the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) Indonesia, as quoted by Antara.
The three Indonesian soldiers have been evacuated to a hospital to receive treatment.
"We do not yet know the origin of the explosion," Ardiel said.
She described this week as a difficult time for peacekeepers in the UNIFIL area of operations. She also expressed hope for the speedy recovery of the three injured peacekeepers.
UNIFIL reminds all parties to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and to avoid combat activities around its area of operations.
This is the third incident in a week, in line with other Israeli attacks that have hit southern Beirut.
This latest incident adds to the sorrow for Indonesia, which previously lost three personnel in Lebanon.
Lance Corporal (Praka) Farizal Rhomadhon was killed by artillery fire in the vicinity of the Indonesian contingent's position in Adchit Al Qusayr on Sunday.
A day later, two other Indonesian personnel, Captain (Inf) Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan, were killed in an attack on the convoy they were escorting.
Indonesia has yet to name the parties responsible for the attack, citing an ongoing probe by UNIFIL.
As reported by Spacewar, Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war on March 2 when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in retaliation for the US-Israeli attacks that killed Iran's top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But even before the recent escalation, Israel had launched frequent attacks on Lebanon, even after the November 2024 ceasefire deal.
After March 2, Israel responded with massive attacks across Lebanon and a ground invasion in the south of the country. Lebanese authorities reported 1,368 deaths, mostly civilians, in a month of war.
