TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution renewing the mandate for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, for the next three years. In a vote on Friday, as reported by Anadolu, the resolution received support from 151 countries, while 10 countries opposed and 14 abstained.
The majority vote to renew its mandate underscores its irreplaceable role, despite political pressures and funding instability. This result represents significant diplomatic support for the agency amid one of the most challenging periods in its history.
Responding to the voting outcome, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated on platform X that the decision "reflects the broad solidarity of people across the world with Palestine Refugees."
He also urged for the decision to be "translated into a genuine commitment & matching resources to ensure the mandate is fulfilled."
UNRWA was established by the UN General Assembly over 70 years ago to assist Palestinians who were forced to leave their homeland due to the 1948 Israeli occupation.
The UN agency has been experiencing severe financial plight since Israel launched a defamation campaign, accusing some UNRWA staff of involvement in the October 7 attacks.
Following these allegations, several major donor countries, including the United States, suspended or ceased funding for UNRWA. This has hampered the agency's ability to provide humanitarian assistance and basic services to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
UNRWA has requested Israel to provide information and evidence supporting these allegations, but the request has remained unanswered.
