TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono said the government is working to expedite the repatriation of the remains of nine Indonesian nationals who died in a devastating apartment fire in Hong Kong last week.
Following the handover of humanitarian aid for flood victims in Sumatra at the Pancasila Building in Jakarta on Friday, the minister expressed condolences to the families of those who perished in the tragedy.
“There are local regulations governing repatriation, but we are making every effort to accelerate the process,” Sugiono said. He noted that repatriating bodies from Hong Kong typically involves lengthy procedures, prompting continued coordination with local authorities.
The fire tore through the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, on November 26, 2025, leaving at least 159 people dead, 79 injured, and 31 still missing.
According to the latest figures from the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry as of Thursday, nine Indonesian citizens were confirmed among the fatalities.
Meanwhile, 129 others were reported safe, one is currently receiving medical treatment, and another remains unaccounted for. All 140 Indonesians residing in the complex worked as domestic helpers.
Hong Kong authorities have detained 21 individuals, including personnel from the main contractor, scaffolding and fire-alarm subcontractors, and technical consultants, as part of their investigation into the incident.
Investigators suspect bamboo scaffolding and plastic sheeting used to cover windows contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze, engulfing several floors within minutes.
On Sunday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong has formed a coordination team to assist families of the victims.
The team will handle all documentation needs and respond to inquiries from relatives awaiting updates on the repatriation process.
