TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has drawn attention at the draw for the 2026 World Cup after receiving the FIFA Peace Prize. It is the first-ever peace award from the world football federation.
The trophy was presented directly by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., in the early hours of Saturday, December 6, 2025. The moment was broadcast on FIFA's official YouTube channel.
In an introductory tape, FIFA explained the reason for the award. “We honour a dynamic leader who has engaged in diplomatic efforts that create opportunities for dialogue, de-escalation and stability and who has championed the unifying power of football on the world stage," as cited from Antara.
"Welcome to the very first winner of the FIFA Peace Prize, the 45th and 47th President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald J. Trump," the FIFA president said while presenting the award.
After the broadcast, Trump took the stage to receive the soccer ball-shaped trophy and a gold medal, which he immediately put around his neck. "This is one of the greatest honors in my life," he said, adding that "so many different wars we were able to end, in some cases just before they started.”
During his speech, Trump also commended the United States' cooperation with Canada and Mexico as the joint hosts of the 2026 World Cup. "We have set new records on ticket sales. And we're going to have an event the likes of which the world has never seen. We've worked closely with [Canada and Mexico] and the coordination, friendship, and relationship has been outstanding," he said.
He closed with an optimistic statement about the condition of his country. “The world is a safer place now … we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world.”
The FIFA Peace Prize is the first peace award in the organization's history, and it has positioned Trump as its inaugural recipient.
