TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that the perimeter of one of its posts in southern Lebanon came under "direct fire" from Israeli forces on May 13.
In a statement by UNIFIL on Wednesday, as reported by Anadolu, the mission expressed "concern over the recent aggressive actions of the Israeli army involving UNIFIL personnel and assets near the Blue Line," referring to the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel.
The incident was the first time a UNIFIL position came under direct fire since a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect on Nov. 27, 2024.
UNIFIL said it recorded "at least four other incidents involving Israeli ground forces near its positions along the Blue Line."
"In recent times, UNIFIL has observed aggressive behavior by Israeli forces against peacekeepers carrying out operational activities in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701," the UN force said.
Earlier on Tuesday, UN peacekeepers patrolling alongside the Lebanese army near the town of Maroun Al-Ras reported being targeted "with lasers from an Israeli military point near them".
In another incident south of the Alma Ash-Shaab region on May 7, laser beams were fired from two Israeli Merkava tanks at a UNIFIL patrol.
"As the patrol began to move, a drone was reconnoitring five meters above them and trailed the patrol's movements for one kilometer," UNIFIL said.
Meanwhile, another drone reportedly reconnoitred a UNIFIL post east of the town of Houla.
UNIFIL condemned all such acts and reminded that "all parties, in accordance with their respective responsibilities, must maintain the security and safety of UN personnel and property and respect the immunity of UN assets at all times".
A fragile ceasefire has been in effect in Lebanon since November last year, ending cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah that escalated into a full-blown conflict in September 2024.
The Lebanese government has reported up to 3,000 violations of the ceasefire by Israel, including the deaths of nearly 200 people and the injury of 500 others.
According to the ceasefire deal, Israel was supposed to withdraw all its forces from southern Lebanon by January 26, 2025. However, that deadline was extended to February 18 after Israel refused to comply.
However, Israel still maintains military positions at five border posts with Lebanon.
