TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia's three-day ceasefire proposal, insisting on a one-month-long truce instead, in line with the proposal put forward by the United States.
Zelensky called Russia's proposal theatrical. "An unconditional ceasefire is the model proposed by the Americans. We are following that model. Whether it starts on that date or another – ideally earlier. Yes, let's try for 30 days. Why a 30-day ceasefire? Because it's impossible to reach any agreements in three, five, or even seven days," Zelensky told reporters on Saturday, May 3, 2025, as quoted by Euro News.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a ceasefire from May 7-9, when foreign representatives are invited to the annual Victory Day parade in Moscow. Zelensky said he could not guarantee the safety of parade attendees.
"Ukraine cannot guarantee other countries the safety of their representatives during their planned trips to Moscow for the 9 May parade, as the Russian side can independently take any actions against the guests and shift the blame for this to Ukraine, and the Ukrainian side, in turn, cannot be responsible for what is happening in the Russian Federation," Zelensky said.
Amidst the proposal, Russia continues to attack Ukraine. On Friday night, at least 47 people were injured in Kharkiv after Russian airstrikes hit Ukraine. Drones damaged residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, and numerous vehicles.
Following the attack, Zelensky urged allies to strengthen their support for Ukraine. "While the world hesitates with decisions, nearly every night in Ukraine turns into a nightmare, costing lives. Ukraine needs strengthened air defence. Strong and real decisions are needed from our partners — the United States, Europe, all our partners who seek peace," he wrote on X in the early hours of Saturday.
