TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A joint search and rescue (SAR) team successfully evacuated the body of a Malaysian tourist, RAG (57), from a ravine on the Torean climbing route of Mount Rinjani on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. local time. The victim was found dead at a depth of about 80 meters after the SAR operation that started last Saturday.
The Head of Mataram SAR Office, Muhamad Hariyadi, stated that the evacuation process was carried out using a lowering and lifting system utilizing mountaineering equipment. Both systems were controlled by a team located on top of the cliff.
The steep and rugged terrain, as well as thick fog, posed the main challenges for the rescuers. "The process of evacuating the victim's body took around 3.5 hours," said Hariyadi when met at Torean on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
After being successfully evacuated from the ravine, RAG was taken to the entrance of the Torean climbing destination. "The victim has been handed over to BTNGR and the family. Subsequently, the body will be taken to Bhayangkara Hospital Mataram for further examination," he added.
The rescuers consisted of personnel from the Mataram SAR Office, Kayangan SAR Post, Mount Rinjani National Park Office (BTNGR), the Indonesian armed forces, The National Police (Polri), the East Lombok BPBD, the East Lombok SAR Unit, EMHC, Fire Department (Damkar), Rinjani Volunteers, and porters.
