TEMPO.CO, JakartaTurkey has closed its airspace to Israeli aircraft in protest of the Gaza war, said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. "We have completely cut off our trade with Israel. We do not allow Turkish ships to go to Israeli ports. We do not allow their planes to enter our airspace," he said in a special parliamentary debate on Gaza in Ankara on Friday, August 29, 2025, as quoted by Al Arabiya.

Turkey severed direct trade relations with Israel last May. Turkey has demanded a permanent ceasefire and immediate entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza. In 2023, the two countries had a trade value of US$7 billion.

Last week, Turkish media reported that a ban on maritime traffic related to Israel had been imposed, though there has been no official statement. According to reports, Israeli ships are banned from docking in Turkey, and Turkish-flagged ships are not allowed to enter Israeli ports.

Ankara has been a vocal critic of Israel's attacks in Gaza, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly referring to Israel's actions as genocide and likening Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hitler.

Last November, Turkish authorities denied Israeli President Isaac Herzog's aircraft permission to enter Turkish airspace for a visit to a summit in Azerbaijan. "As Turkey, we have to take a stance on certain issues," Erdogan said when asked about the incident.
