TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Thai Navy has deployed four vessels near the border to support ground forces as the conflict with Cambodia entered its third day, as reported by Khaosod English as cited by Anadolu.
The Royal Thai Navy launched Operation 'Trat Pikhat Pairee 1' (Trat Strike 1) against Cambodian forces at three points along the border, after Cambodian troops were reported to have expanded their positions, as reported by The Nation in Thailand.
Marking the third day of the conflict, the Thai military continued its offensive against Cambodia, with attacks in Thmor Don, Ta Krabei, Phnom Peuy, O' Khla Khmum, and O' Smach in Oddar Meanchey.
In response, the Cambodian military has retaliated with firm defensive measures to protect its national sovereignty.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation of Cambodia, Sin Chansereyvutha, stated that aircraft can still fly over the conflict zone if they are at an altitude of more than 11 kilometers, according to the Khmer Times newspaper's report.
Cambodia has reported 13 casualties in the clashes, including five soldiers, since the fighting began on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Thailand has reported 19 casualties, including six soldiers, according to Thai PBS.
Thousands of residents from both sides of the border have been evacuated.
Thailand has deployed F-16 fighter jets, while Cambodia has launched rockets in the battle. Both countries have accused each other of being the initiators of the shelling.
The Ambassador of Cambodia to the UN has called for a ceasefire after an emergency closed-door meeting on Friday night in New York. Meanwhile, Cherdchai Chaivaivid, Thailand's envoy to the UN, urged Cambodia to "immediately cease all hostilities and acts of aggression, and resume dialogue in good faith."
Malaysia, which leads the regional ASEAN bloc covering both countries, has called on both sides to retreat and has offered mediation. The U.S. and China have also expressed concern over the developments.
“We asked for an immediate ceasefire—unconditionally—and we also call for a peaceful solution to the dispute,” Cambodia’s UN Ambassador Chhea Keo said after the UN meeting.
The neighboring countries in Southeast Asia are in a dispute over border areas around Cambodia's Preah Vihear Province and Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani Province, reigniting tensions since May 28, when a Cambodian soldier was killed.
