TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pop music icon Taylor Swift has announced that she has reclaimed the copyrights to her first six albums. The news was conveyed in a lengthy letter posted on her website on Friday, May 30, 2025. She is now able to control her entire music catalog after repurchasing the master recordings of these albums.
"I almost stopped thinking it could happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that’s all in the past now," Swift wrote in a statement, as quoted by NBC News. "All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs... to me."
About Taylor Swift's Albums
Quoting from Economic Times, the singer, who debuted in 2003, stated that she bought back her recording catalog. It was originally released through Big Machine Records, and the latest owners were the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. In recent years, Swift has re-recorded and re-released four of her six albums.
"I can't thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now," Swift addressed her fans.
Swift's re-recordings were initiated after Hybe America CEO Scooter Braun bought and sold her original catalog, representing Swift's effort to regain control of her songs. The launch of "Taylor's Version" is more than just conventional re-recordings; it includes music and visuals that deepen the understanding of her work. "I am happy for her," Braun stated.
Four albums have already been re-recorded, starting with Fearless (Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version) in 2021. Additionally, the re-recording of 1989 (Taylor's Version) was released in October 2023, just four months after the launch of Speak Now (Taylor's Version). All four achieved commercial success and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Taylor Swift lost the copyright to her masters in 2019 after her first record label, Big Machine, sold them to music executive Scooter Braun. In a Tumblr post in June 2019, she referred to it as "the worst-case scenario" and accused Braun of "incessant manipulative bullying" throughout the years.
The masters were subsequently sold again to the investment firm Shamrock Capital. Braun denied these allegations. In 2021, he reportedly offered to sell the catalog back, but his team declined.
For years, fans have been urging Taylor Swift to re-record and release the Taylor Swift (debut album) and Reputation albums.
