Students Float 'Reform 2.0' Protests, Intelligence Chief Urges Unity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) Alliance is planning to stage 'Reformasi Jilid II' (Reform 2.0) protests against various government policies and economic turmoil in the country. In response, the head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Muhammad Herindra, urges citizens to maintain national unity.

"The most important thing is we must all guard our unity. Let's avoid unfavorable circumstances," said Herindra when met at the parliamentary building in Jakarta on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

Students from various campuses are once again strengthening national consolidation in response to economic pressure, rising basic commodity prices, rupiah depreciation, and various government policies.

The term 'Reformasi Jilid II' resurfaced when the BEM SI alliance in Central Java pushed for an 18-day deadline for the Indonesian government to stabilize rupiah that plummeted to record lows in early June, reaching Rp18,201 per US dollar.

The student alliance conveyed its demands while protesting in front of the Central Java Bank Indonesia office in Semarang on Friday, June 5, 2026. "Failure to meet demands will result in a 'Reformasi Jilid 2' demonstration," wrote a collaboration post by BEM SI and Story Rakyat.

The BEM SI alliance previously gathered online on June 4, discussing the economic crisis in Indonesia, especially the further decline in rupiah exchange rate, the bloated fiscal, rampant unemployment, and rising living costs.

The chair of the University of Indonesia's Student Executive Board (BEM UI), Yatalathof Ma'shum Imawan, said the student body will consolidate a response against recent economic and democratic conditions under President Prabowo Subianto's regime. According to Yatalathof, BEM UI will hold a focus group discussion (FGD) with student movements across UI, followed by a national consolidation.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government appreciates the aspirations and inputs regarding the demands of the student groups for the government to promptly strengthen the rupiah's value.

However, he stated that the current economic problems in Indonesia are not easy to overcome. "[This condition] is certainly influenced by various factors," he said  on June 8.

The government is striving to resolve the problem, Prasetyo said, by undertaking intense and close coordination to provide certainty to business actors.
