TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered increased energy efficiency in several specific sectors to ensure targeted energy-saving policies amid the threat of an oil crisis caused by the conflict in the Middle East. This was conveyed by the Cabinet Secretary, Teddy Indra Wijaya, following a closed meeting yesterday.
During the closed meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Prabowo received reports from several ministers regarding the government's measures to anticipate and prepare for the threat of an oil crisis, especially to maintain national energy resilience.
"The President discussed strategic steps related to the energy conservation plan in various sectors as an anticipation of the political dynamics in the Middle East region that could affect the stability of global energy supply and prices," stated Teddy in Jakarta on Thursday, as quoted from Antara. "The President instructed that efficiency be focused on specific sectors to maintain stability and domestic energy resilience."
During the meeting, the President received reports from the Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and the Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Technology Brian Yuliarto.
Other officials attending the meeting included the State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, the Investment and Industrial Estate Minister/Head of BKPM as well as Danantara CEO Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, and the President Director of Pertamina Simon Aloysius Mantiri.
The Presidential Secretariat, in its official statement, explained that the President's energy efficiency measures are a strategy to ensure the sustainability of the national energy supply while maintaining national economic stability amidst global uncertainties.
"Through cross-ministry coordination, the government strives to ensure that energy-saving policies can be effective, targeted, and not disrupt the economic activities of society," as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's official statement.
Meanwhile, Airlangga explained that one of the energy efficiency plans includes implementing a work-from-home system to reduce fuel consumption from travel.
He mentioned that the WFH scheme would be implemented for 1 day within a 5-day working period. "The technical details are currently being prepared, as this is expected to involve not only government employees but also private companies and regional governments. We are currently working on the details, and once the concept is mature, we will inform the public in more detail," he said.
