Prabowo Eyes Merger of Geological Agency and BMKG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto raised the possibility of merging the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) with the Geological Agency, which currently operates under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).He floated the idea during a limited meeting on disaster management developments, following a wave of natural disasters, ranging from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, striking multiple regions across Indonesia.

At the meeting, the Head of State urged Geological Agency Head Lana Saria to collaborate more closely with various line ministries and state bodies. "Later on, we will consider whether the Geological Agency should be integrated with BMKG. But we will discuss this later," Prabowo said at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Prabowo did not elaborate further on the proposed merger of the two separate institutions.

During the limited session, he underscored the succession of disasters plaguing the nation. Of late, Indonesia has been battered by multiple disasters, ranging from earthquakes in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, to forest and land fires across several provinces, as well as the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. "I just want to monitor developments and hear about the current situation," Prabowo said.

He added that Indonesia is grappling with a series of concurrent disasters. The former defense minister outlined several ongoing crises, including the earthquakes in Flores, heightened activity at Mount Anak Krakatau, land and forest fires, and hazardous haze. "This is our fate as a country located on the Ring of Fire," Prabowo said.

He also revealed plans to increase the national budget for disaster mitigation. According to Prabowo, the recurring disasters across Indonesia must serve as a crucial lesson. "This is a lesson for us and the government I lead. The budget allocation for disaster mitigation must be significantly increased," Prabowo concluded.
