TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah exchange rate strengthened to Rp17,507 per US dollar in Wednesday afternoon trading on September 9, 2026. Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, Ibrahim Assuaibi, attributed the 125-point increase to the positive Consumer Confidence Index in August, which rose to 118.5. This includes the national retail car sales record, which increased by 7.7 percent from 81,115 units last month to 83,422 this month.
"It's highly likely that the rupiah will continue to strengthen in trading tomorrow. There's a potential for a 50-point strengthening to Rp17,480 per US dollar," Ibrahim stated on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Ibrahim argued that the rupiah's sharp strengthening this afternoon appears attractive despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. Escalating tensions between Iran and the United States have caused the price of Brent crude oil to surpass US$100 per barrel. Not to mention the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
However, global oil prices did not weaken the rupiah this afternoon. "This is quite remarkable because the market is seeing quite positive internal data, leading to optimism that foreign capital inflows will return to the country," Ibrahim said.
Regarding the Consumer Confidence Index in August 2026, Bank Indonesia recorded an increase from the July 2026 index, at 116.8. Executive Director of the Bank Indonesia Communication Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, stated that increased consumer confidence in August was supported by a rise in the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI) and the Consumer Expectation Index (CEI).
Meanwhile, the CECI was recorded at 109.4, higher than the July index of 107.9. The CEI in August 2026 was recorded at 127.6, up from the July index of 125.7.
