A tsunami warning has been issued for Japan, Hawaii, and parts of Alaska in the U.S. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said, 'Today's earthquake is serious and the strongest in decades.'
Russian news agency TASS reported from the nearby largest city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, that many people were running into the streets. Several pieces of furniture inside homes were damaged, such as collapsing cabinets and broken mirrors. Cars were shaking on the roads and balconies in buildings were shaking heavily.
Electricity was cut off. In the capital of Kamchatka, mobile phone services were down.
Japan issued a tsunami warning. It is estimated that a three-meter high wave will hit along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Japan has ordered evacuations in some areas.
The National Tsunami Warning Center, based in Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for several areas in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The tsunami warning was also expanded to the state of Hawaii, U.S.
