TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has urged the Jakarta Metropolitan Police to remain open to re-examining the death of Ministry of Foreign Affairs diplomat Arya Daru Pangayunan, should new evidence emerge in the future.
Komnas HAM Chairperson Anis Hidayah said the commission had visited the location where Arya died in his boarding room and had also monitored the legal proceedings carried out by the police.
Following its review, the commission came to the same conclusion as the police: that no other party was involved in Arya’s death.
“However, we ask the Jakarta Metropolitan Police to allow for the possibility of a re-examination if new facts are discovered,” said Anis in a press statement on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Jakarta Police’s Director of General Crime Investigation Wira Satya Triputra previously stated that although the case has been concluded, the investigation has not been officially closed.
The police remain open to further investigation into the cause of Arya’s death.
“There is currently no official letter terminating the investigation,” Wira said at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The police earlier confirmed that there were no indications of foul play in Arya Daru’s death. This was supported by several findings, including the discovery of the victim’s fingerprints on the yellow tape wrapped around his face.
Wira noted that Arya had purchased the tape himself during a trip to Yogyakarta with his wife. The tape was then used by Arya to wrap around his own face.
“No DNA from any individual other than the victim was found on the tape or the bedsheet,” Wira said. “Based on our findings, we can’t conclude anything beyond that.”
He also emphasized that the police’s role is limited to determining whether a criminal act occurred in the case. Wira stated that concluding the cause of death falls outside the police’s authority.
“If we were to draw further conclusions about the cause of death, it would not be appropriate,” he added.
Arya Daru was found dead in Room 105 of the Gondangdia Guest House boarding facility in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on July 8, 2025. His body was discovered by a boarding house staff member at around 08:00 AM local time. The young diplomat was found lying in bed, his head wrapped in tape and his body covered with a blanket.
