Power Supply in North Sumatra and Aceh Expected to Normalize by Saturday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia said the electricity supply in Tapanuli Tengah and Sibolga, North Sumatra, has been partially restored following the recent disruptions.

He expects full power distribution by Saturday, December 6, 2025.

“Electricity has been gradually restored since Thursday, although not yet at full capacity. We aim for completion by Friday night or Saturday at the latest. Sibolga was already well powered as of yesterday,” Bahlil said after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Thursday, December 4.

In Aceh, power conditions in Banda Aceh and Bireuen have also begun to improve. Bahlil noted that the Arun Gas Power Plant (PLTG), which previously shut down due to flooding, has resumed operations.

“Our PLTG was offline because its transmission network was flooded. It has now been elevated and should be fully operational by Friday night or Saturday,” he said.

Fuel and LPG Supply

Bahlil assured the public that fuel supplies remain sufficient despite logistical challenges caused by road closures. The government is maintaining distribution by mobilizing generators, fuel tankers, and alternative delivery routes.

“Some areas are using generators and tank deliveries to ensure continuous supply. In Tapteng, several gasoline stations are already operating 24 hours,” he said.

LPG distribution has also started to recover, although not yet at normal levels. Previously, supplies for Tapanuli Tengah, Nias, and Sibolga were sourced from Dumai. Stocks are now being redirected through West Sumatra to ensure stability.

“West Sumatra has become a temporary hub to support distribution. God willing, if the weather allows, the situation should improve significantly by Friday or Saturday,” Bahlil added.

To accelerate fuel delivery to affected regions, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga deployed 17 additional tank trucks with 16-kiloliter capacity. Some areas, however, remain difficult to access due to damaged roads, particularly along the Padang Panjang–Sicincin route, a key fuel supply corridor.

Distribution continues via longer alternative routes that take five to six hours of travel. Pertamina has also delivered 8 kiloliters of fuel on Monday and 16 kiloliters on Tuesday to Pasaman, which was temporarily isolated by landslides.

Bahlil said additional fuel has been distributed to local authorities and emergency services to support heavy equipment and transportation needs in disaster response operations.
