TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis passed away at 88 on Monday, April 21, 2025. A day before his passing, the man named Jose Mario Bergoglio conveyed a message during his final public appearance at Easter.
Through the message, Pope Francis expressed concern for the people of Gaza. Through a message read by an aide on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, on Sunday, April 20, 2025, Pope said he is thinking of the Christian community and people in Gaza, where conflict continues to cause death and destruction.
The message is the Urbi et Orbi or a special blessing to ''the city and the world'' that the Pope delivered during Easter. The Vatican's official website published the complete text of the blessing.
In his message, the man who has been Pope for 12 years assessed that the conflict in Gaza has created a dramatic and worrying situation. He also appealed to the conflicting parties to immediately cease hostilities.
Pope Francis' appeal to the party at odds: quickly make a ceasefire, release the hostages, and help the hungry people who long for a peaceful future!
According to the Pope, he feels close to the suffering of all people in Palestine and Israel. On this occasion, Pope Francis highlighted the increasingly severe anti-Jewish sentiment worldwide. However, at the same time, he expressed that he continues to think about the ongoing suffering of the people of Gaza.
In addition to delivering a message of peace in Gaza, Pope Francis also addressed other conflicts in his blessing. Including the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the war in Ukraine, and the armed conflict in Myanmar.
The Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, announced the sorrowful news of the Pope's passing one day after Easter through a written statement. Cardinal Kevin stated that the Pope passed away at 07:35 Vatican time.
Cardinal Kevin also conveyed the Vatican's gratitude to Pope Francis in the statement. "With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."
