PLN's Renewable Energy Infrastructure Only at 7.6%

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) has set a target to develop 20.9 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy power plants by 2030, in line with the 2021–2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). However, as of April 2025, only 1.6 GW of operating capacity has been realized.

"From 2021 through April 2025, a total of 1.6 GW in renewable energy power plants have become operational," PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said during a meeting with the House of Representatives Commission XII on Wednesday, May 14. "This includes the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant."

Although current operations fall far short of the target, Darmawan noted that PLN has already processed renewable energy projects totaling 18 GW in capacity—approximately 86 percent of the target. This includes 2.8 GW in the planning stage, 4.7 GW in the financing process, 8.5 GW in procurement, 3.3 GW under construction, and 1.6 GW that has completed commissioning.

PLN also reported it had achieved 97 percent of its target for new renewable energy capacity additions as of April 2025. From a target of 507 megawatts (MW), 492 MW have been realized.

"One of these is the Merangin Hydroelectric Power Plant, which began operations in March 2025," Darmawan said.

In addition, the state power company is accelerating the development of electricity infrastructure. Several projects were inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto in 2024. "These include 3.2 GW of power generation, of which 0.4 GW comes from renewable sources, 740 kilometers of transmission circuits, and 1,740 MVA of substations," he said.

Darmawan also said that the operational infrastructure is capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 14 million tons of CO per year.
