TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit the White House on Monday, April 7, 2025 to discuss the newly announced tariffs with President of the United States Donald Trump. This news was conveyed by three Israeli officials on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
Reported by Arab News, the impromptu visit was first reported by Axios, stating that if the visit were to take place, the Israeli leader would be the first foreign leader to meet directly with Trump to try to negotiate a tariff removal deal.
Netanyahu's office has not confirmed the visit. The meeting is likely to also include discussions about Iran and Israel's war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.
The surprise invitation from Trump came through a phone call to Netanyahu last Thursday. Netanyahu is currently visiting Hungary.
As part of the new tariff policy announced by Trump, unspecified Israeli exports to the United States will face a 17 percent tariff. The US is Israel's closest ally and largest trading partner.
An official from the Israeli Ministry of Finance said last Thursday that Trump's latest tariff announcement could impact the export of Israeli machinery and medical equipment.
Israel has moved to cancel the remaining tariffs on US imports on Tuesday. Both countries signed a free trade agreement 40 years ago, and about 98 percent of US goods are now duty-free.
On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of new import tariffs. Trump will impose a base tariff of 10 percent on imports, with heavier retaliatory levies for goods from some countries, causing global leaders to be shaken, Axios reported.
These reciprocal tariffs will affect dozens of countries, including some of the US's largest trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, and South Korea will face tariffs of 20 percent or higher.
Israel stated earlier this week that they would eliminate all remaining import duties on US products, but it is still unclear whether the US will consider it.
Both countries have a free trade agreement, but there are still some tariffs on US agricultural products and some other exports.
