TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump is taking over the Washington DC police under federal control. On Monday, August 11, 2025, Trump ordered the deployment of the National Guard to the nation's capital to combat crimes in the area, despite crime rates in Washington DC reaching an all-time low over the past 30 years.

“I’m deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, DC,” Trump told journalists at the White House.

He was accompanied by government officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bondi.  “Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals.”

Trump's move targets cities controlled by the Democrats, exercising executive power over local matters. He dismissed criticism that he was manufacturing a crisis to justify expanding presidential authority.

According to Al Arabiya, hundreds of officers and agents from more than a dozen federal agencies, including the FBI, ICE, DEA, and ATF, have been deployed across the cities in recent days.

Washington's Democratic major Muriel Bowser denied Trump's claims, stating that the city has not been experiencing a "crime spike." Bowser also highlighted that violent crime had reached its lowest point in over three decades years ago.

Violent crime fell by 26 percent in the first seven months of 2025 after a 35 percent drop in 2024. Overall crime dropped by 7 percent, according to the city police department.

However, gun violence remains a problem. In 2023, Washington had the third-highest gun homicide rate among U.S. cities with a population of over 500,000, according to the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.

Trump previously deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles. In June, he deployed 5,000 troops to respond to protests against his administration's immigration raids. State and local officials objected to Trump's decision, deeming it unnecessary and provocative.

The president has broad authority over the 2,700 DC National Guard members. The National Guard has been deployed to Washington multiple times, including in response to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters.
