TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Minister of Invenstment and Downstream Industry, Rosan Roeslani, stated that the budding global trade war does not hinder Apple from investing in Indonesia. According to him, this type of investment will increase in line with President Donald Trump's import tariff policies.

Rosan conveyed that the multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, has already purchased land in Batam City as a commitment to continue its investment.

"The land clearing has also been conducted, so the investment will move forward despite geopolitical and economic tensions," Rosan told the media crew in South Jakarta on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

According to Rosan, Apple's investment in the country continues in line with the initial commitment to build a US$1 billion factory. "Based on our communication with them, we see that Apple's investment will actually increase," said Rosan.

The CEO of the Daya Anagata Nusantara, or Danantara, shared that he had met with three Apple vendors investing in Indonesia. However, Rosan did not specify who the three vendors were. He only mentioned Huayou as an Apple partner that supplies many components from China.

Huayou is a Chinese company that invests in several projects, one of which is the construction of the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP). Lately, the company has replaced LG Energy Solution in the Titan Project, the electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain.

Rosan explained that one unit of the iPhone 16 requires about 340 types of components. The entry of new investments and the involvement of additional vendors in the future make Indonesia potentially a component provider, including components exempt from import duties. Especially for laptops and cell phones.

"This is an opportunity that we are trying to further explore to bolster investments in Indonesia," said Rosan.

Previously, several Apple executives had met with Rosan, including Vice President of Global Policy at Apple Nick Ammann and Corporate Communication and Public Relations of Apple Southeast Asia Brett Galvin. Their meeting lasted for almost an hour, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

Apple had previously planned to invest US$100 million, in Indonesia to fulfill the required domestic component levels (TKDN) to allow the distribution of the Apple iPhone 16 in the Indonesian market. However, the government requested them to increase the investment commitment to US$1 billion, or Rp16.14 trillion.
