TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Stargazers are set to be spoiled with a phenomenon that NASA has named the best meteor shower in the world. In the northern Australian skies, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 12–13.
Turning up every summer, the Perseid meteor shower is best known for its dazzling, fast-moving meteors, often dubbed the “shooting stars.” While they’re visible to the naked eye, here’s everything you need to know to catch the best view of the 2025 Perseid meteor shower.
When to see the Perseid meteor shower in Australia?
Returning every August, the Perseid meteor shower will peak on the nights of Tuesday, August 12, and Wednesday, August 13. As noted by Women’s Weekly, the best time to see the Perseids in Australia is between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., just before sunrise. You can expect to catch up to 100 shooting stars per hour, streaking across the sky at an incredible speed of about 59 kilometers per second.
Is the Perseid meteor shower visible in all of Australia?
Unfortunately, the Perseid meteor shower won’t be visible in all of Australia. Areas blessed with the best, brightest views of the cosmic event include north of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and North Queensland.
However, since the Perseid meteor shower coincides with the Sturgeon Moon, which will still be quite bright even after its full phase on August 9, this year’s peak may make it harder to see the full 100 meteors per hour. Still, you can expect to see at least one or two bright fireballs per hour lighting up the night sky.
How to see the Perseid meteor shower in Australia?
Catching the Perseid meteor shower in Australia is easy. According to BBC and TimeOut, all you need are your eyes, a rug to lie on, and something to keep you warm. No special equipment, like binoculars or telescopes, is required.
Since the meteors will streak across the sky from many directions, it’s best to find a spot with a wide, unobstructed view. Also, avoid artificial lights for at least 30 minutes before stargazing to help your eyes adjust to the darkness.
