Manchester United Are Growing Stronger After Derby Stalemate, Says Amorim

2 days ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United's coach, Ruben Amorim, stated that his team showed positive progress when facing Manchester City in the 31st week of the English Premier League at Old Trafford Stadium on Sunday, April 6, 2025, even though the match ended in a goalless draw.

"You can see it, (same) as me, the team is more comfortable. The positions, we can make better connections, we are pushing the opponents sometimes to the last third. We are defending and blocking the talented players like Manchester City have," he said after the match, as quoted from the club's official website on Monday, April 7, 2025.

According to him, his team was able to block most chances, making it difficult for City to create opportunities.

The former Sporting Lisbon coach sees every player developing, and they will grow as a team with more time together. To be more dangerous, his team needs to play more in the final third to create more opportunities.

"I think we blocked most of the chances; they didn't create much. They had the ball, but without danger, so we are improving," he said.

Overall, he affirmed that Bruno Fernandes and his teammates played better compared to when they faced Nottingham Forest in the midweek.

He acknowledged that the Manchester derby factor certainly brought a different excitement, better in defense, more compact, and allowed fewer spaces for the opponents.

"I think we are improving how we defend, we are more compact, we gave them less space than the last games. So, we are improving. We create some chances and then I think we have, always the same problem, is the lack of goals," he added.

Following their Premier League clash with Manchester City, Manchester United are set to face Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, an away match scheduled for early Friday in Indonesia Western Time, April 11.

Amorim emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, calling it a crucial moment in United’s season. With the team currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, the Europa League represents a potential route to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

"We can reach the Champions League next season, we can win something, so we are going to do everything to try to go to the next stage," he concluded.
