TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director Hanung Bramantyo announced his latest film project, an adaptation of the famous South Korean series Descendants of the Sun, at IdeaFest 2026. While telling a story of romance between contrasting professions, Hanung emphasized that this film version will bring local identity and cultural relevance to Indonesian society.
The film, which has completed the filming process, is projected to premiere across Indonesian theaters in 2027. "The process has taken quite a long time, and I am finally delighted to announce this international collaboration," Hanung Bramantyo said in a press release on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Star-Studded Reunion and New Challenges
The film brings together a lineup of the country's top actors, including Reza Rahadian, Dian Sastrowardoyo, and Eva Celia. This project marks the first time Reza and Dian have been paired as the primary leads in a feature film.
For Reza, his involvement in the project continues a long professional and personal relationship with Hanung. Their past collaboration even earned Reza his first Citra Award for the film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban in 2009. "Mas Hanung is like a big brother to me. We have worked together for a long time. It is more than just a reunion, and I couldn't say no to him," Reza said.
Meanwhile, Dian Sastro expressed excitement about the opportunity to share the screen with Reza in a fresh dynamic. "Reza and I have had long careers in the film industry, but it turns out this is the first project where we are truly united as co-stars playing love interests. I am very excited," Dian said.
Eva Celia also shared her experience joining the film's international cast. Despite feeling nervous about the role's demands, she felt reassured by the director's guidance. "I was very nervous at first, especially given the unique challenges I faced in this film, but Mas Hanung created a comfortable space through his direction," Eva said.
The production is realized through an international collaboration among Dapur Film, RFA, NEWKO Global Entertainment, Dwi Warna Sentosa (Tobali Film), Piring Langit, and South Korean entertainment firms including Next Entertainment World (NEW), Barunson C&C, and D BAY FILM FACTORY SDN. BHD. International sales will be handled by Barunson E&A, while South Korean distribution will be managed by Contents Panda.
