TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta will have a special cat island in Thousand Islands, or Seribu Islands, which will be managed professionally to ensure the comfort of tourists visiting the place.
The Cat Island tourism preparation is underway, with the local government given leeway to choose which island will be designated as the feline tourist spot. The regency government is at present conducting studies to determine which island to choose.
According to the Acting Regent of the Seribu Islands, Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan, government officials have visited several potential islands, such as Onrust Island, Cipir Island, and Rambut Island.
"We are currently conducting a visit to Small Tidung Island, which is directly under the auspices of the Jakarta Provincial Government," he said in Jakarta on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Fadjar stated that Cat Island will be managed professionally, prioritizing health other services to ensure tourists’ enjoyment. "We can directly observe and map out the locations for cat vegetation, along with other activities," he said.
He added that the presence of Cat Island will also provide employment opportunities for the residents of Seribu Islands.
The potential of Small Tidung Island
The founder of Animal Defenders Indonesia, Doni Herdaru Tona, believes that the extensive Small Tidung Island would be suitable for Cat Island tourism due to its white sand and good vegetation. Furthermore, the island is recommended to serve as a reference for resolving social conflicts involving cats.
In Cat Island, there will be veterinarians and other facilities to care for the cats. "However, the most vital thing is not to disturb the existence of Small Tidung Island, which has previously been developed," Doni said.
The Small Tidung Island is separated by a 700-meter stretch of shallow sea from the Big Tidung Island. The island covers an area of 17 hectares surrounded by beaches. The sea around it is overgrown with coral reefs, often visited by tourists. Despite its size, the island is uninhabited. The government has made this island a center for natural conservation and cultivation.
