TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Isnawa Adji, confirmed that the agency is on 24-hour alert to anticipate floods during the transition from the rainy to the dry season. This week, vigilance has increased due to the forecast of potential moderate to heavy rain, influenced by several atmospheric phenomena such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation.
The BPBD team collaborates with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to gather and disseminate accurate weather information. "A quick response to citizen reports is our priority," Isnawa said in a written statement on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
Furthermore, Isnawa mentioned that the BPBD is optimizing its early warning system through various information channels, including social media. The public is advised to remain vigilant regarding the potential for extreme weather and to monitor information from both the BPBD and BMKG.
"We hope that the public can navigate the 2025 dry season safely, healthily, and remain productive, despite challenging weather conditions," Isnawa added.
The BMKG previously forecasted that Jakarta and its surrounding areas remain at risk of moderate to heavy rain until May 26. This condition is influenced by several atmospheric disturbances, including Kelvin and Rossby waves, as well as warm sea surface temperatures.
These disturbances increase the potential for rain cloud formation, "even though climatologically it has entered the beginning of the dry season," Isnawa noted.
According to BMKG's nowcasting site, rain is falling in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi today, May 21. Rain is also pouring down in southern regions, such as Sukabumi and around Cianjur, as well as on the northern coast of Java, in areas like Rengasdengklok and Pamanukan.
