TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The bells of Jakarta Cathedral rang for several minutes as the funeral procession of Pope Francis took place at Vatican City.
The 123-year-old bells were sounded precisely at 03:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesia Time), aligning with the start of Francis' funeral at 10:00 AM Vatican time.
The funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, was held on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The procession for the man born Jorge Mario Bergoglio was also broadcast live on television screens inside Jakarta Cathedral.
At the cathedral, two bells were rung. Tempo's observation at the scene showed that the bells tolled for approximately five minutes. During the ringing, several congregants inside the cathedral were seen kneeling and bowing their heads, as the funeral procession played on the television screen.
Reverend Yohanes Deodatus, associate pastor of Jakarta Cathedral, explained that the bells were intentionally rung to accompany Pope Francis' funeral from afar. "The church bells tolled for several minutes as a symbol of mourning, a symbol of mourning for the departure of Pope Francis, our beloved pope," Yohanes said at the site.
He added that the tolling also served as an invitation for all to pray for the Pope. "When he was first elected as Pope, he also asked for prayers and blessings from the people for his leadership," Yohanes said.

The funeral Mass was held on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica, one of Catholicism's most significant sites. More than 50 world leaders and 11 monarchs attended the ceremony.
Dignitaries present reportedly included U.S. President Donald Trump, Argentine President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the leader of Asia's largest Catholic country.
Pope Francis' funeral was broadcast live on several television networks, allowing around 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide to witness the event.
His body was laid in repose inside St. Peter's Basilica. The coffin was sealed on Friday night in a ceremony led by Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell, who currently serves as the acting head of the Church.
Following the ceremony, the coffin was moved to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, outside Vatican walls, honoring Francis' wish for a simple burial. He becomes the first pope to be interred there since the 1600s, and the first pope to be buried outside the Vatican in over a century.
