TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Macau police have arrested two Indonesian nationals. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported by Antara, the two Indonesian nationals were apprehended on allegations of working without the proper work permit as stipulated in their visas.
According to a written statement from Judha Nugraha, the Director of the Protection of Indonesian Nationals Abroad (PWNI) at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the two Indonesian nationals were suspected of operating a restaurant business without a license. Judha stated, "After being questioned by the local police, they have been released while awaiting further legal proceedings regarding their case. Both Indonesian nationals have since resumed their regular work as domestic helpers."
According to the laws in Macau, said Judha, any foreigner found working outside the scope of activities permitted by their residency permit (visa) can face fines ranging from 5,000 MOP (approximately Rp10 million) to 20,000 MOP (approximately Rp40.2 million) and may also face deportation from Macau.
The Director of PWNI also affirmed that the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong will continue to monitor the case's progress and provide any necessary assistance.
Two Indonesian nationals were apprehended by the Macau Police on August 2, 2025, for allegedly operating a restaurant business without proper authorization in an apartment in Macau. They had been running the restaurant business since July 2024.
