TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinator of Indonesian hospital services in Myanmar, M. Hardian Basuki, revealed the role of the Indonesian medical team in assisting the victims of an 8.2 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar. Hardian mentioned that the Indonesian Emergency Medical Team (EMT) has served 1,947 patients in Naypyitaw, the capital of Myanmar, during April 7-14, 2025.

"Eight days of service, almost 2,000 patients," said Hardian Basuki in his written message to Tempo on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Hardian explained that around 5 percent of the patients were directly affected by the earthquake and 3 percent were indirectly affected. Meanwhile, 92 percent of the patients treated had no connection to the earthquake.

During those eight days of service, Hardian conveyed that the average number of patients per day reached 243 people.

Furthermore, Hardian stated that the medical assistance was necessary because the local healthcare facilities were disrupted or incapacitated due to the disaster's effects.

"When the local healthcare services can be independently carried out by the local healthcare facilities, then the EMT's task is completed," he said.

In relation to this, the Chairman of the Indonesian EMT, Eko Medistianto, mentioned that the patients treated by his team had various complaints, such as respiratory disturbances, lacerations, and bone fractures. Eko stated that the team handling the Myanmar patients consisted of 32 people, including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff.

Eko explained that the medical treatments provided were also diverse. The medical team also stood ready if surgical procedures were needed.

"We examine. We also use X-ray equipment from the Myanmar hospital," said Eko in a virtual interview with Tempo on Friday, April 11, 2025.

As quoted from the official website of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Pratikno, announced that Indonesia will soon provide humanitarian aid to the earthquake victims in Myanmar.

This decision was made after considering the extent of the disaster's impact and the urgent needs in the affected areas. This was discussed in the Ministerial-level Meeting held online on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

The Coordinating Minister emphasized that Indonesia will promptly dispatch the Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR), the Emergency Medical Team (EMT), as well as logistical aid and equipment to support the emergency response to the disaster.

"The Indonesian government will soon send humanitarian aid to our brothers and sisters in Myanmar. The USAR team, medical personnel, and various logistical aid will be dispatched gradually to promptly assist the victims," said Pratikno.
