TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot, outlined the Indonesian government's strategic roadmap to address global energy volatility while emphasizing national sovereignty in determining energy transition pathways at the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting in Texas, the United States (US).
Speaking to international delegates on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Yuliot highlighted the importance of strengthening energy security and access while respecting each country’s sovereign right to determine its own energy transition pathway.
“Indonesia supports every nation’s sovereign right to determine its own energy pathway based on national circumstances. We continue to strengthen national energy security while simultaneously driving a just energy transition toward net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner,” Yuliot said in a statement on Wednesday (September 16).
To bridge the gap between domestic fuel consumption, currently at 1.6 million barrels per day, and domestic crude oil production of roughly 600,000 barrels per day, Indonesia aims to increase oil output to one million barrels per day.
The government is offering investment opportunities across 118 oil and gas working areas under flexible fiscal terms.
At the same time, Indonesia is advancing its flagship B50 program, which blends 50 percent biofuel into diesel fuel.
As the first country in the world to implement a B50 blend, Indonesia expects the initiative to replace 310,000 barrels per day of imported diesel, save nearly US$10 billion annually, and create more than two million jobs.
In the power sector, where electricity demand is growing by 5.3 percent annually, the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan targets an additional 69.5 gigawatts of generation capacity, with 76 percent coming from renewable energy sources.
The plan calls for US$180 billion in investment and opens 73 percent of the new capacity to independent power producers.
Indonesia also plans to deploy 100 GWp of solar power capacity to replace diesel generators on the main grid, although coal will remain a key baseload energy source during the transition.
Representing Indonesia under the US G20 presidency in 2026, Yuliot urged the forum to promote a balanced approach that advances energy security, affordability, accessibility, and sustainability without imposing a “one-size-fits-all” model on developing economies.
Indonesia also advocates for future G20 agendas to maintain a focus on energy transition and sustainable energy.
According to Yuliot, efforts to meet current energy needs must go hand in hand with the development of a cleaner and more sustainable energy system.
