
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Archbishop Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo from Indonesia arrived in Vatican on Sunday morning, May 4, 2025. Jakarta Archdiocese Secretary (KAJ) Pastor Adi Prasojo said Suharyo will participate in the conclave or Council of Cardinals to elect a successor for Pope Francis who passed away on April 21, 2025.
"The conclave will start on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, opened with a morning mass," said Adi via WhatsApp message on Sunday night, May 4, 2025. According to him, Cardinal Suharyo will directly attend several hearings held by the Holy See Vatican on Monday morning and evening.
A video shared on KAJ's Instagram account showed Cardinal Suharyo departing from Jakarta on Saturday with a suitcase and a blue cloth bag. The former Archbishop of Semarang left the Jakarta Archdiocese Residence around 15:30. Suharyo sat in the front seat of the car that took him to the airport.
Cardinal Suharyo traveled from Jakarta to Vatican with a layover in Doha, Qatar. He arrived around 08:15 in Rome, Italy, and was welcomed by the Indonesian Ambassador to Vatican Trias Kuncahyono, Father Adi Prasojo, Father Antonius Baur who is pursuing doctoral studies, and Brother Richard Sadin.
