TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chairperson of Tourism Malaysia, Dato' Yeoh Soon Hin, stated that Indonesia has become the second largest tourist market for Malaysia with a record of 4.1 million tourists in 2024. Dato' Yeoh revealed this at the Ritz-Carlton Jakarta on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
According to Dato' Yeoh, the number of visitors from Indonesia increased by 19.1 percent, compared to 3.4 million visitors in 2023. "This increase reflects the close relationship between the two countries and the high interest of the Indonesian people in tourist destinations in Malaysia," he said.
The latest data shows a sustained positive trend. During February 2025, the arrival of tourists from Indonesia reached 774,994 people. This is an increase of 14.8 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
Overall, Malaysia recorded 38 million foreign tourists in 2024 with revenue of RM106.7 billion. This figure indicates a rapid recovery of Malaysia's tourism sector following the pandemic.
Dato' Yeoh also highlighted the ease of air travel between the two countries, which contributed to the increase in the number of tourists. "There are 591 flights from Indonesia to Malaysia with a capacity of 106,586 seats per week. This facilitates the movement of Indonesian tourists to Malaysia," he said.
The Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, promoted by Tourism Malaysia, has set a higher target of 45 million foreign tourists, with a revenue of RM270 billion. This campaign will focus on the preservation of Malaysia's culture.
In an effort to promote Malaysia to Indonesian tourists, the Malaysian delegation, consisting of 60 participants from 38 organizations, including business owners, hotels and resorts, product owners, and the Malaysian Homestay Association, held 12 meetings with key players in the tourism industry in Indonesia.
"We hope this mission will successfully introduce Malaysia more aggressively and attract more Indonesian tourists to Malaysia ahead of the Visit Malaysia 2026," said Dato' Yeoh.
As an additional attraction, the Tourism Malaysia delegation also brought 8 chefs from Malaysia in collaboration with the Marriott Bonvoy Group to introduce Malaysian cuisine at several top hotels in Indonesia. This includes the JW Marriott Medan, Yogyakarta Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta Mega Kuningan, and Sheraton Surabaya.
