TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Christians worldwide will commemorate Easter on Sunday, April 20, 2025. The celebration of Easter holds a deeper spiritual significance, including in Southeast Asia, where it is intertwined with local traditions.
Making the most of this long weekend break can be an opportunity to connect with traditions and history. As quoted from AirAsia MOVE's press release, here are the Easter rituals in three Southeast Asian countries- the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, reflecting their cultural richness.
1. Philippines
The Philippines, with the largest Catholic population in Asia, observes the Holy Week with utmost reverence. In Manila, Catholics participate in the Visita Iglesia, a spiritual pilgrimage to seven churches for prayer and reflection in one night. However, the most dramatic tradition takes place in San Fernando, Pampanga. Here, thousands gather to witness Senakulo, a street play depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, culminating in a symbolic crucifixion for repentance.
2. Indonesia
In Indonesia, the most profound Easter observance is held in the capital of Larantuka, East Flores. For seven days, the city holds Semana Santa, a Portuguese Catholic tradition that has endured for over five centuries. The highlight of this series of events is the Good Friday procession, where thousands dressed in black parade the statues of Tuan Ma (Blessed Virgin Mary) and Tuan Ana (Jesus) to the Larantuka Cathedral.
Semana Santa has evolved beyond being a religious heritage to becoming a cultural icon and a tourist attraction in East Flores. An increasing number of foreign tourists visit annually to experience this unique cultural phenomenon. Now, Larantuka is not just a mere story, but an easily accessible destination.
3. Malaysia
Malaysia may not be predominantly Catholic, but Easter traditions are warmly celebrated in historical cities like Melaka. Easter Mass is held in Portuguese colonial-style churches, including St. Peter's Church, the oldest Catholic church in Malaysia, built in 1710.
Melaka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a blend of Asian and European cultures. Many historical destinations have become iconic landmarks for tourists to visit.
As a travel platform, AirAsia MOVE aims to improve ASEAN connectivity and provide accessible and affordable travel experiences. "For AirAsia MOVE, Southeast Asia is not just a geographic region, but rather a mosaic of rich and interconnected cultures. Travel becomes a window for everyone to understand, feel, and celebrate this diversity," said Amelia Virginia, Marketing Manager of AirAsia MOVE Indonesia.
