TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Geological Agency has reported the discovery of trapped gas within Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, a finding that follows a decrease in volcanic tremors on July 24-25, 2025. The volcano, located in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), recorded only seven volcanic tremors during this period.

"The obstruction can increase the potential for explosive eruptions due to the accumulation of trapped gas," stated Muhammad Wafid, Head of the Geological Agency, in a written statement on Friday, July 25, 2025.

According to seismic observations by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency, low-frequency earthquakes at Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki have decreased, while non-harmonic earthquakes have increased. These conditions indicate heightened magmatic activity at shallow depths.

"Magma supply has been identified at deep to shallow depths, indicating movement towards the surface," Wafid explained.

Results from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) show an inflation pattern over the past week, suggesting magma migration from deeper to shallower zones. This is further supported by an increase in tiltmeter data during the same period, despite a horizontal trend for the past two days.

"The combination of these two deformation data indicates an increase in pressure in the gas-rich conduit, which has the potential to lead to explosive eruptions and lava flows," he said.

Visually, a glow can be observed at the peak of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki at night, indicating glowing material or heat near the crater. Increased gas release is also evident through thick white smoke, signaling a rise in crater temperature.

The Geological Agency has maintained the alert status for Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki. Residents and tourists are advised to stay away from the area within a 6-kilometer radius, and the southwest-northeast sectoral area within a 7-kilometer distance from the eruption center.

Furthermore, people are urged to be wary of potential lava floods during heavy rain, particularly in river areas originating from the peak of Lewotobi Laki-laki. "Such as in Nawakote, Dulipali, Nobo, Hokeng Jaya, and Nurabelen," Wafid cautioned.
