Fact Check: Was Indonesia's DPR Building Burned Down in July Protest?

4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A claim that protesters burned down the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) building in Jakarta circulated on YouTube (videos 1, 2, and 3) throughout the third week of July 2026. The video was then reshared on Facebook [archive] and TikTok.

The video shows a protest against the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) policy, taxes, and fuel price hikes. The demonstration appeared chaotic and showed several buildings burning. The incident is claimed to have occurred between July 18-22, 2026.

Is it true that protesters burned down the DPR building on July 18-22, 2026?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content by comparing video clips with original recordings, scanning them with an AI detection app, tracing recording locations, and cross-referencing the information with credible sources. The results showed that there were no protests involving the burning down of the DPR building from July 18 to 22, 2026. The videos in the content come from several different demonstrations.

Based on media reports and the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Management Center (TMC) account on X, there were no protests at the DPR building on July 18-19, 2026.

A protest was recorded as having taken place on July 22, 2026. The National Legal Intellectual Network (JIHN) organized the action, which took place in front of the Attorney General's Office Building in South Jakarta. The action was to criticize the handling of the case of former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah.

DPR RI official Instagram account also shows normal activity in the building. On July 24, 2026, for example, DPR Commission III held a Public Hearing (RDPU) regarding the Asset Confiscation Bill.

Video Verification

Video 1

The video from the first YouTube account shows a riot taking place in front of a building. The footage is identical to Tribunnews' footage of the clash between protesters and police near the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout in Jakarta on June 15, 2026.

Tempo verified that the incident took place in front of the Blu Tower on General Sudirman Street in Menteng, Central Jakarta, using Google Maps. The location is approximately six kilometers from the DPR building. At the time, protesters were rallying against non-subsidized fuel prices hike, the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, and the Red-and-White Village Cooperative (KDMP).

At minute 1:30, the second video shows a mob throwing stones at a line of police officers. The footage comes from a protest by Pati Regency residents against Regent Sudewo in August 2025, as reported by Tempo.

Video 3

The third video shows several people trying to escape from the top of a burning building. The incident actually occurred during a protest on August 29, 2025. The footage is identical to a photo taken by Kumparan journalist Rayyan Farhansyah from a different angle.

People in the video attempt to escape from the ACC Kwitang Building in Central Jakarta, which was set on fire by unknown individuals during a protest. The demonstration took place in front of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) Command Headquarters to protest the death of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan, who was run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle.

At minute 13:45, the video also shows a crowd gathering on the street at night. However, the location is not at the DPR building, but rather in the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout area in Central Jakarta, as reported by VOI.

The protest by students and civil society alliances took place on June 12, 2026. The crowd remained until the evening before finally dispersing.

CONCLUSION

Tempo's investigation concluded that the claim that protesters burned down the DPR building on July 18, 19, and July 22, 2026, is false.
