EU Mulls Replacing High Tariffs for Chinese Electric Cars

GOOTO.COM, Jakarta - After a few months ago the European Union (EU) imposed high tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars, but these tariffs are now being reconsidered for replacement. Both parties are exploring the idea of setting a minimum price for Chinese electric vehicles as a potential solution.

Quoting Carscoops today, Monday, April 14, 2025, a spokesperson for the European Commission confirmed that European Commissioner for Trade, Maros Sefcovic and Chinese Minister of Trade Wang Wentao, have discussed and agreed to explore the idea of a minimum price. At this stage, further discussions are ongoing, although no details have been shared.

It is known that the European Union imposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles last year after a lengthy investigation to see if Chinese brands received unfair subsidies from their government, allowing them to produce and sell electric vehicles at a much lower price than their competitors.

The imposed tariffs vary depending on the amount of assistance received by each of them, as well as how cooperative the Chinese manufacturers are in the European Union's investigation.

For example, SAIC received the highest tariff, which is 35.3 percent on top of the 10 percent import duty that was already in place. While BYD and Geely were subject to tariffs of 17 percent and 18.8 percent, respectively.

While negotiations continue, it remains to be seen whether this minimum pricing strategy will attract attention or just be another attempt to avoid deeper problems in global trade.
