TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has projected that the peak of the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year travel season will fall on December 24, 2025.
Citing a government mobility forecast, he said up to 17.18 million people are expected to travel during the holiday period.
“The peak of the return flow is predicted on Friday, January 2, 2026, with an estimated 20.81 million travelers,” Dudy said after chairing a coordination meeting on year-end holiday transport readiness at the Transportation Ministry office in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
To manage the surge, the ministry will operate an Integrated Transport Command Post from December 18, 2025, to January 5, 2026, allowing realtime monitoring and coordination across modes.
Anticipating Passenger Surge and Extreme Weather
The minister highlighted two key challenges this year: rising passenger volume and the threat of extreme weather.
He said the ministry continues to coordinate with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and transportation operators to ensure readiness in high-alert areas.
Mitigation measures have been prepared across all transport sectors. On land routes, authorities will deploy buffer zones, apply delay systems, and enforce contraflow or situational one-way traffic when necessary, including at major crossings.
At sea, navigation and patrol ships will be deployed, with additional berthing space and alternative ports on standby.
In the aviation sector, the ministry is reinforcing safety checks through extensive ramp inspections, extending airport operational hours, and ensuring additional flight capacity.
Meanwhile, railway operators are establishing Special Monitoring Zones, stockpiling emergency repair materials, and increasing personnel at level crossings.
Dudy reaffirmed that transport safety and security remain the government’s primary concern during the holiday period.
“So far, we have conducted ramp checks on 40,683 land vehicles, 987 sea vessels, 191 ferries, 363 aircraft in service, and 3,333 railway facilities,” he noted.
