Data Centers, Solar Panels Expected to Drive Global Tin Demand

4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned mining company PT Timah believes data centers and solar panel industries will drive the global tin demand in the future, as stated by Harry Budi Sidharta, the company's deputy president director.

"Solar panels and data centers are the drivers of tin demand growth," Harry said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

Harry confirmed that global tin demand has been relatively stable, as it is largely used for industrial purposes, particularly electronics.

In terms of resources, he stated that Indonesia remains one of the main global tin producing regions. The tin mineralization line stretching from the Bangka Belitung Islands to the Riau Islands presents a strategic advantage that is enjoyed by few.

"In Indonesia, the only tin resources are found in Bangka, Belitung, and a little in Kundur. There are no other locations in Indonesia. The tin veins from Bangka are found in Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and then in Myanmar, which then move up to China. Those are the tin veins, and they don't go anywhere else," Harry said.

Amidst the positive outlook, he ensured that the company would focus on maintaining supply sustainability through exploration and reserve expansion.

Harry revealed that the company is currently evaluating the development of deeper offshore mining and primary mining on land, as part of the efforts to ensure continued production in the future.

In addition to ramping up exploration, he went on, the company is also preparing various technological studies to support more complex mining.

"In the future, we will mine offshore, perhaps deeper. We are currently evaluating our vessels to be able to mine deeper at sea, and then on land, we will move into primary mining," said Harry.

PT Timah currently has a Work and Budget Plan (RKAB) of 30,000 tons, with a long-term target of increasing production in line with efforts to bolster its reserves and resources.

In the first quarter of 2026, PT Timah posted a net profit of Rp1.5 trillion, equivalent to 595 percent of the Rp252 billion in target. The company's net profit was supported by rising global tin prices and increased production and sales volumes.

The company recorded revenue of Rp5.47 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 160.5 percent year-on-year growth compared to Rp2.10 trillion in the same period the previous year.
