TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canadian Prime Minister Canada Mark Carney firmly told President of the United States Donald Trump that “Canada is not for sale,” during their meeting at the White House, Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.
Carney's stance contradicts Trump, who has repeatedly stated that he wants to annex Canada and make it the 51st US state.
As reported by Anadolu, Canadian sovereignty became one of the issues discussed during Carney's visit to the White House, which included discussions on defense, trade, taxes, and other matters while avoiding a hostile stance.
Both displayed a friendly attitude, such as when Carney told Trump that “some places are never for sale, ever.”
However, Trump responded with “Never say never, never say never,”
The U.S. President then directly rejected Carney's request to lift tariffs on Canadian products, reaffirming his position that Canada has nothing the U.S. wants.
While Trump refused to lift the tariffs, Carney said the upcoming USMCA update (Canada-US-Mexico trade agreement) would be “the basis for a broader negotiation.”
“I think we established a good basis today,” Carney said at a press conference at the Canadian embassy after he met with Trump.
“Really, today marked the end of the beginning of a process of the United States and Canada redefining that relationship. The question is how we will co-operate in the future.”
Carney won the federal election at the end of April, one of the main proclamations of his campaign was that he would be the best leader to deal with the unstable Trump administration.
