INFO TEMPO - PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk (BTN) officially signed the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB) initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) in December 2023, marking a major milestone in the Bank’s sustainability journey. With this commitment, BTN became the first Indonesian state-owned bank to embed the PRB as a strategic foundation for its operations, reinforcing its leadership in responsible and sustainable banking, according to a press release received by Tempo on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

The Principles for Responsible Banking provide the leading global framework for a sustainable banking industry, aligning financial institutions with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Climate Agreement, and other global and regional sustainability frameworks. Through this commitment, BTN affirms its strategy to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across its business operations, directing capital flows to sectors that promote sustainability and contribute to inclusive economic growth.

"As a bank with a pivotal role in the housing sector and sustainable financing, we are proud to be the first Indonesian state-owned bank to implement the UN Principles for Responsible Banking. This commitment is part of our broader strategy to embed responsible banking practices and drive meaningful sustainability impact across the country," said Nixon L.P. Napitupulu, President Director of PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk.

BTN has adopted the six core Principles of Responsible Banking, which serve as the foundation of its sustainability strategy. These include aligning its business strategies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement; continuously increasing positive impacts while reducing negative impacts across its banking activities; encouraging and supporting sustainable practices among clients and customers; proactively engaging with stakeholders to achieve shared goals; strengthening governance frameworks and fostering a responsible banking culture; and regularly reviewing and publicly reporting on sustainability outcomes to ensure transparency and accountability.

As part of its PRB implementation, BTN has conducted a portfolio impact analysis utilizing the UNEP FI Portfolio Impact Analysis Tool. The analysis identified Finance and Housing as sectors in which BTN’s operations have the most significant impacts.

In the Finance sector, BTN has demonstrated strong contributions to financial health and inclusion by providing affordable financing to low-income communities. This is reflected in the allocation of 59% of its mortgage (Kredit Pemilikan Rumah/KPR) portfolio towards subsidized housing loans, improving access to financing for all segments of society.

In the Housing sector, BTN plays a critical role in expanding access to decent housing. Analysis shows that 61% of BTN mortgage recipients are located in rural areas—regions that typically face greater barriers to accessing adequate housing. Furthermore, 68.12% of recipients are in the productive age group of 30 to 60 years, indicating the Bank’s focus on supporting working populations. BTN also promotes gender inclusion, with women representing 31% of its total mortgage beneficiaries.
