Bogor to Announce Daily Air Quality After Anak Krakatau Ash Reaches City

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Bogor City Government in West Java will monitor and announce daily air quality conditions following the arrival of Mount Anak Krakatau volcanic ash in the area.

Bogor Deputy Mayor Jenal Mutaqin stated on Sunday evening that, based on the latest assessment, Bogor City's air quality index stood at 83, placing it in the "moderate" category.

"God willing, the City Government will update the air quality status daily so that the public is not left wondering about the actual air conditions in Bogor City," Jenal said.

He explained that the Bogor City Government is set to receive air quality monitoring equipment from the Ministry of Environment (KLH) on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The Bogor City Environment Agency (DLH) will use this equipment to obtain up-to-date data on air conditions following the area's exposure to volcanic ash.

"The Ministry of Environment will lend us the equipment during the day, so we will attempt to take measurements in the afternoon and hopefully get results. Today it is at 83; hopefully, it will be better tomorrow," he said.

Although air quality remains in the moderate category, Jenal urged the public to limit outdoor activities. Residents wishing to exercise are advised to opt for indoor activities for the time being.

He noted that these activity restrictions apply not only to students but also to the general public as a precautionary measure against volcanic ash exposure.

"The condition is moderate—or 'blue' status. Activities are permitted, but we are limiting them," Jenal said.

As part of mitigation efforts, the Bogor City Government is also preparing approximately 250,000 masks to distribute to priority groups within the community.

Additionally, personnel are spraying water on main roads, public facilities, sidewalks, and plants to clear away accumulated ash. This spraying operation was intensified starting Sunday evening.

The City Government will also monitor potential health impacts through the Health Agency by utilizing the Free Health Check (CKG) program in various areas.

These checks are being conducted to determine if any residents are suffering from health issues caused by exposure to the volcanic ash. Meanwhile, the Bogor City Government has mandated remote learning for students on September 7–8, 2026, as a protective measure against the impact of volcanic ash.
