TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in the Marmara Sea, Turkey, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The earthquake and tsunami director at BMKG said the quake had caused hundreds of injuries and damage to hundreds of buildings.

"Causing injury to 236 people and 378 reports of minor damage to buildings or houses, one of which collapsed," said Daryono in a written statement on Friday, April 25, 2025.

The majority of the victims are in Istanbul, amounting to 173 people.

Daryono explained that the earthquake epicenter was located at coordinates 40.84 degrees Northern Latitude, 28.14 degrees Longitude East, 60 kilometers west of Istanbul, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremor was recorded at 4:49 p.m. local time last Wednesday, and as of today, Friday, April 25, at 3:00 p.m., 280 aftershocks have been recorded, with the biggest at 5.3 magnitude.

Daryono assured that the earthquake did not impact Indonesian territory, nor did it pose tsunami threats.

Based on the analysis, Daryono stated that this tremor is classified as a shallow earthquake due to the activities of the Marmara Fault. "The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that this earthquake has a strike-slip fault mechanism," he said.

Quoting GFZ, a similar earthquake previously occurred at the same location on September 26, 2019, with a magnitude of 5.7. The earthquake last Wednesday expanded the fault zone towards Istanbul. The fault line has enough energy to cause tremors with a magnitude of 7.4. "Today's earthquake is the most severe in the region in over 25 years," said Head of Geomechanics and Scientific Drilling at GFZ, Marco Bohnhoff, as quoted from GFZ.

The region around the Marmara Sea has one of the most dangerous geological structures in the world. There is also the Northern Anatolian Fault that separates the Eurasian and Anatolian tectonic plates along more than 1,000 kilometers from Eastern Anatolia along the Turkish Black Sea coast and through the Marmara Sea to the northern Aegean Sea.

According to GFZ records, more than 20,000 people have died there due to earthquakes of over magnitude 7 since the beginning of the 20th century.
