TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Turkey was struck by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the Marmara Sea on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, local time.

Daryono, Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), reported that the quake resulted in hundreds of injuries and significant damage to hundreds of buildings.

"Causing 236 people injured, 378 reports of minor damage to buildings or houses, one of which collapsed," said Daryono in a written statement on Friday, April 25, 2025.

The majority of the victims, 173 people, were located in Istanbul.

Daryono also explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 40.84 degrees North Latitude, 28.14 degrees East Longitude, 60 kilometers west of Istanbul, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The tremor occurred at 16.49 local time last Wednesday, followed by aftershocks on Friday, April 25, 2025, recorded 280 aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.3.

Causes of Turkey's Frequent Earthquakes

According to GFZ, a previous earthquake of the same magnitude struck the same area on September 26, 2019. The earthquake that occurred last Wednesday has expanded the fault zone toward Istanbul.

The fault line still holds enough energy to trigger tremors reaching up to 7.4 on the Richter scale.

"Today's earthquake is the most severe in the region in over 25 years," said Head of Geomechanics and Scientific Drilling at GFZ, Marco Bohnhoff, as quoted from GFZ.

In 2023, Turkey also experienced a powerful earthquake in a different area, along the Turkey-Syria border. The February 2023 quake caused the collapse of 1,718 buildings and left 2,023 people injured.

Meanwhile, Daryono explained that the 2025 earthquake is categorized as a shallow earthquake, associated with activity along the Marmara Fault.

"The source mechanism analysis indicates that this earthquake has a right-lateral strike-slip fault mechanism," he said.

Citing Antara, another factor behind Turkey's frequent earthquakes is its location in one of the world's most seismically active zones, driven by the existence of two major faults within the Anatolian Plate.

These two faults are the Northern Anatolian Fault, which stretches between the Anatolian and Eurasian Plates across northern Turkey, and the Eastern Anatolian Fault, which runs along the Arabian Plate in the country's southeast.

Movement along the Eastern Anatolian Fault is believed to have the potential to trigger devastating earthquakes.
