TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Infection and Tropical Disease Division/Department of Child Health, Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Anggraini Alam, explained that children have the highest risk of experiencing severe Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and death.
Anggraini, who is also a Pediatric Specialist and Consultant at Faculty of Medicine, Padjadjaran University, Bandung, added that everyone is at risk of contracting DHF, from newborns to the elderly.
"About 75 percent of dengue cases occur in the 5-44 age group with the highest death rate of 40 percent occurring in children aged 5-14 years. The imperfect immune system in children is the main factor increasing the risk of contracting DHF," she said in a press release received by Tempo on April 28, 2025.
Director of Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, Ina Agustina Isturini, said that in 2024 the cumulative number of DHF cases in Indonesia reached nearly 250,000 cases. From this number, there were more than 1,000 reported deaths from 488 districts/cities in 36 provinces in Indonesia. Ina Agustina also added that from year to year, since 2016, the trend of DHF cases in Indonesia has been continuously increasing. "Since the beginning of 2025 until February 16, the number of DHF cases in Indonesia has reached 10,752 cases with 48 deaths," she said. She added that the highest surge in cases occurred in Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and East Java.
Prior to this, to commemorate National Dengue Fever Day, the baby and child care brand My Baby held a campaign called the Indonesian Anti-Mosquito Movement as an effort to prevent the spread of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). DHF has often been one of the diseases that still threatens public health in Indonesia. It is noted that the disease caused by the dengue virus and transmitted through the bites of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes has increased every year.
The high risk of death due to DHF in children is a serious concern for parents to increase vigilance and take preventive measures as early as possible. Deputy Managing Director of Consumer Cosmetic & Health Care at Tempo Scan Group, Winny Yunitawati, explained that the risk of child deaths caused by DHF is a serious matter that we can prevent together starting from the smallest scope, which is the family. She also added that her team has a responsibility to educate the public, especially mothers, to always be ready to protect their children from dengue virus-carrying mosquito attacks. "This commitment is realized by once again carrying out the real action of the Indonesian Anti-Mosquito Movement," she said.
Winny said her team invited 8,000 families in Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya to take DHF prevention measures through education and the implementation of 3M Plus (Drain, Cover, Recycle Plus the Use of Baby Oil) and fumigation in residential areas, providing baby oil products and larvicide powder to eradicate mosquito larvae. "We believe that education and real action are the key to preventing DHF. Through this campaign, we hope that parents can be more active in maintaining environmental cleanliness with 3M Plus and protecting their children from mosquito dangers," said Winny Yunitawati.
