TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 200 thousand workers are expected to attend the May Day commemoration at the field of the National Monument (Monas) on May 1, 2025, according to the president of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI), Said Iqbal.
The Jakarta celebration will draw workers from Greater Jakarta and its surrounding areas, such as Karawang, Purwakarta, Serang, and Cilegon.
Said Iqbal claimed that President Prabowo Subianto is expected to attend the event. “It is almost certain that President Prabowo Subianto will participate in the May Day celebration,” he said, adding that if true, Prabowo would become the second Indonesian president to attend Labor Day after first president Soekarno.
According to Said Iqbal, May Day celebrations will take place in at least 30 provinces across the country, joined by at least 1.2 million workers nationwide. Said Iqbal stressed that May Day is not a mere celebration, but a day to advocate for labor issues.
Said Iqbal outlined six issues during this year’s May Day, including the demand to eliminate outsourcing, the formation of a Layoff Task Force, fair wages, protection of workers through the Manpower Law Revision, protection for domestic workers by ratifying the Domestic Worker Protection Bill, and the eradication of corruption by ratifying the Asset Seizure Bill.
The Labor Party President said that workers hope Prabowo will grant them the eradication of outsourcing, adding, “the president already agreed to the Layoff Task Force. Meanwhile, the Manpower Bill, the Domestic Worker Protection Bill, and the Asset Seizure Bill will go through the legislative process with the government,” said Said.
