Why Iran Threatens UK as US Launches Fresh Strikes on Tehran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iran warned Britain of the consequences of its decision to allow the United States to use a British airbase to launch attacks on Iranian territory.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that any country involved in military aggression against Iran must bear the consequences of its decision.

"Iran is determined to defend its national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests against foreign aggression, and any party that participates in military aggression against Iran in any way will bear responsibility for the consequences of its decision," the ministry said in a statement.

Iran also condemned the British government's decision to allow its airbase to be used by US military aircraft.

Tehran said the move violates the United Nations Charter and constitutes "an act of aggression" under Article 3(f) of UN General Assembly Resolution 3314, which defines aggression to include allowing a state’s territory to be used by another state to carry out attacks against a third country, citing TRT World.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that British Prime Minister Andy Burnham had authorized the United States to continue using a British airbase to launch what it called "defensive" attacks against Iran.

In response to Iran's warning, the UK said it "stands ready 24/7 to defend itself."

"Our Armed Forces are ready to keep the United Kingdom safe from any kind of attacks, whether it's on our soil or from abroad," a government spokesperson said, as quoted from The Independent.

"This includes operating a layered approach to air and missile defense, provided by Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force assets equipped with a range of advanced capabilities, working closely with our NATO allies," they added.

Iran and the United States previously signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18, which stipulated a cessation of hostilities that began on February 28. However, since July 8, US forces have launched several attacks on Iran.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) maintained that the attack was a response to Iran's actions against merchant vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on US military bases in the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump later declared that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran was no longer in effect.
