TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple reportedly rejected the regulation requiring all smartphone manufacturers to install a cybersecurity application called Sanchar Saathi to sell their products in India. Although this type of cybersecurity application is claimed to be able to fend off cyber-based fraud and track stolen phones, it is suspected to have suboptimal performance.
Apple's rejection is not surprising, as the company has its own sophisticated security protection. This action also helps maintain user privacy and security by protecting against applications that Apple has not assessed.
GSMArena reported on Apple's rejection of this regulation on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. The Indian Ministry of Communication has set a 90-day deadline for smartphone manufacturers, including major players like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi, to integrate this application into their devices.
Apple responded to the order by stating that its internal policy prohibits the forced installation of third-party applications that may pose security risks. Manufacturers of iPhones in the country argue that mandating the activation and maintenance of this government application could lead to privacy and security issues in the future.
On the other hand, the emergence of such regulations and applications has sparked controversy and concerns about digital sovereignty. Many argue that forcing the installation of non-removable security applications may violate user privacy.
Furthermore, the biggest concern is the possibility that the scope of these applications could be expanded in the future for state surveillance purposes, undermining user trust. This regulation has overridden the principle of user consent, especially for Apple.
